I’ve been casually following and appreciating Esque Studio from afar for a while, but I hadn’t really noticed that the home accessories brand’s collection had grown so extensive.
DWR Fights Breast Cancer
September 25, 2008
Design Within Reach is currently in the middle of an eBay auction that will raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation to fight breast cancer. The lot includes five pieces of iconic furniture design licensed by DWR, all rendered in pink. Designs include the Emeco Heritage Rocker, the Knoll Tulip Stool, Fritz Hansen’s Swan Chair (pictured), the Eames Aluminum Management Chair, and Marcel Breuer’s Knoll Wassily Chair.
Winter Delights
September 24, 2008Andre Simmons, my new favorite photographer. I’m such a sucker for Nan Goldin’s suggestion that hanging out with your mundane friends and watching them do unconventional things in front of a camera until they are fetching is art. I get the feeling Andre Simmons feels a little bit like this, too. And I haven’t felt captured as a parent like this in a while.
Sexual Liberation Vinyl
September 24, 2008eBoy and Kidrobot have announced a 7.5″ vinyl figure collaboration on Hugh Hefner and the November 1978 cover of Playboy, which featured an illustration by Paul Pope (although a little research digs up a German-born model and actress by the name of Monique St. Pierre). Both will arrive on October 9, with Hef retailing at $9.95 (including a poster) and Paul Pope’s bombshell in an undisclosed limited edition for $60.00.
The Art of Record Design
September 23, 2008University of the Arts London is currently hosting a collection of some of the most iconic album covers of the past four decades in a show called Spin: The Art of Record Design. Subjective as all hell, the set — curated by GQ Editor Dylan Jones, The Horrors’ Faris Rotter, and designer Peter Saville — includes album covers by the likes of Cream, Robert Plant, Uriah Heep, Madness, Adam & the Ants, The Clash, James, Chemical Brothers, Hard-Fi, Lemon Jelly, The Gossip, Beth Orton and Adele. The show is on display through October 3, and if Neville Brody’s not in this thing I’m writing letters.
Mad Men Mania
September 23, 2008In the event that you still can’t get you fix of Mad Men quick enough, here’s a set of illustrations suitable for wall papering. The swingin’ retro designs come from the hand(s) of Nobody’s Sweetheart. This image depicts a rather memorable scene and character, two of my favorite elements so far (because I’m mean-spirited that way).
Jazz Radio
September 19, 2008I like these ads created for Polish jazz station Jazz Radio by, I believe, McCann Worldgroup, with photography by Lukasz Murgrabia. Jazz has a little more of a market share in Europe, but you’d like to see American jazz outlets take a few more chances like this. Isn’t this the kind of thing that young, influential people appreciate? See a couple more ads from the series at Ex.f.
Smart, Stylish Furniture by Staach
September 18, 2008Staach is a Rochester, NY-based furniture design studio that blend’s minimalism and direct utility with quirky visual elements like odd geometry and vibrant color options. The brand’s modest collection of chairs, tables, and stools is refreshingly simple, and the price points are decent, making individual pieces versatile and accessible in a variety of spaces. There’s also a really nice eco angle, as the wood materials are locally and sustainably forested, and glues and lacquers are non-toxic.
